Introducing the Toughbar™ Extension Arm
The Kayalu Toughbar™ is a high-strength extension arm for camera mounts, GPS mounts, iPhone and iPod mounts, marine mounts, fishfinder mounts, binocular mounts, automotive mounts — virtually any mount that uses RAM Mounts's popular 1-inch "B" size ball-and-socket system.
The entire line of Toughbar™ extensions are based on RAM Mounts' 1-inch "B" ball. We also offer extension arms for RAM Mounts' 1.5-inch "C" ball (our Surfpole™ line) and we manufacture "C-to-B" extensions (our Radpole™ line), all available in our online catalog.
Our standard Toughbar is available in three sizes. The Toughbar KLA-5006 adds a full 8.5" (22 cm) to your existing mount when fully extended. The Toughbar KLA-5007, shown in images at above right and above left, adds 10.5" (27 cm) when fully extended. And our Toughbar KLA-5030 adds 14.5" to your existing RAM assembly.
In addition to our three standard Toughbar sizes featured on this page, we also offer a "Toughbar™ XL Series" featuring 100% lightweight marine-grade aluminum Toughbars in three extra-long lengths from 12" to 28" in length. Multiple Toughbars can be connected to create a multi-jointed arm, tailor made for applications requiring a snaking extension with muscle to manage a heavy payload when locked into position.

We manufacture the Toughbar using 100% original RAM Mounts components — two RAM marine-grade anodized aluminum 1-inch "B" balls and a RAM high-strength composite coupler. We assemble the Toughbar with the addition of our own stainless steel rod and UV-resistant PVC tubing. The Toughbar™ XL Series is constructed entirely of aluminum (click here for more info).
The RAM Mounts high-strength composite socket arm not only extends the length of any existing RAM mount — it also adds an extra degree of freedom and versatility to the mount.
The Toughbar quickly integrates into your existing assembly mount, between any existing 1-inch RAM "B" ball and RAM socket arm.
Toughbar steel rods increase in durability with length. Our 8.5" Toughbar is manufactured of 18-8 stainless steel and the 10.5" rod has a weather resistant black oxide coating. The rods have a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 lbs., and a minimum Rockwell hardness of B70. These characteristics ensure that the rod can flex resiliently under the weight of your payload without breaking or buckling.
"You may be more likely to break a kneecap..."
Our 14.5" Toughbar is manufactured of a larger diameter bar than the smaller length Toughbars, of Type 316 stainless steel. Weighing in a just under 8 ounces (213 g), you may be more likely to break a kneecap than bend this 14.5" extension. The 14.5" extension is suitable for fixed base mounts like the Kayalu ParkerMount® series and is not recommended for mounts using a single suction cup. If mounted on a suction cup the long arm creates significant leverage at the suction base, tending to pop the suction cup off its mounting surface.
Streamlined Response to Wind + Water
Toughbars —like all Kayalu poles and extensions, are designed for the active paddler. Aerodynamic and hydrodynamic responses to wind and water are critical factors in the efficient use of a paddler's energy. Every millimeter of pole diameter and weight contributes to resistance.
Kayalu's engineering objective is to maximize structural strength of extension arms with the least weight and drag acting on the deck.
Even on a balmy day, forward motion of a kayak is impeded by poles, mounts and components. Airflow around blocky, blunt or wide-diameter objects causes air currents to separate, creating negative pressure on the backside. This negative pressure is experienced as resistance acting against the forward motion.
A narrow pole, by comparison, allows air and water to move around and over its surface, causing little to no separation. This is a significant advantage to the paddler.
Simply put, the Toughbar is kick-ass tough.
At either end of its steel rod, the Toughbar has a RAM Mounts black powder coated marine-grade aluminum 1-inch "B" ball, fused with Loctite® Threadlocker to provide an extra measure of strength and reliability.
For cushioning and weather-proofing, the Toughbar is insulated with resilient premium-grade UV-resistant tubing.
